Biography

Considering how closely connected the Williams Team has been to its founder Sir Frank Williams and the Williams family throughout the years, it is fitting that his daughter Claire has taken on the duty of Deputy Team Principal.

From an early age Claire has been surrounded by racing. After graduating from Newcastle University in 1999 with a degree in Politics, Claire entered the motorsport industry as a press officer for the Silverstone Circuit in 2000.

It would seem that Claire was destined to be a part of the family business, but it was far from a certainty. Nevertheless, after some persuading from Jim Wright, the Head of Marketing at Williams at the time, and Sir Frank himself, Claire started working at Williams in 2002 as a Communications Officer. In 2010 she was promoted to the position of Head of Communications, taking on the responsibility for all internal and external communications. After the company went public, she became Head of Investor Relations and in 2012 took on the role of Commercial Director.

After Sir Frank Williams stepped down from the day-to-day running of the team in 2013, Claire has taken full responsibility for its operation and long term development and assumed the position of Deputy Team Principal. She is representing the Williams family’s majority and controlling shareholding of the Williams Group of companies on the Board of Directors.

Since Claire took over, Williams achieved some admirable results, finishing third in the Constructors’ Championship in 2014 and 2015 and fifth in 2016 and 2017. During this period Williams secured 12 podium finishes, a significant improvement from previous several seasons. After a difficult 2018, the pieces are being put in place for Williams to rebuild and improve in 2019.

Apart from her work in Formula 1 Claire is also an advocate for the spinal cord injured community and became the Vice President of the Spinal Injuries Association in 2016.

For her services to Formula One Claire was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2016.
