Motorsport.com asked Claire Williams about the possibility of Pat Fry joining Williams as a technical director or chief technical officer, following his departure from McLaren.
The rumors that Pat Fry might be coming to Williams came out last week after it was announced that he was leaving McLaren.
Fry joined McLaren in September 2018 to help the team develop their 2019 car – the MCL34. It is understood that Fry’s position was meant to be temporary while the team was waiting for the arrival of their new technical director James Key. The Woking outfit is having somewhat of a resurgence this year and currently sits in fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship standings.
The announcement came out right after Williams announced that their Chief Technical Officer Paddy Lowe was leaving the team, following an extended leave of absence. Immediately following the announcement, Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams said the team was now free to look for Lowe’s replacement.
However, when asked if the team was looking to bring Fry in, Williams said no decision has been made as of yet.
“As everybody knows now, our situation with Paddy has been closed so we are in a position to look at our structure on the engineering side and decide what is the best option for the team moving forward,” said Williams.
“If that means bringing in a new CTO [chief technical officer] or TD [technical director] then we will do so, but we are still in the evaluation process.
“It is about finding the absolute right person for that job and not making any rash decisions.”
